Grounds for Divorce
New Jersey law provides two "no fault" grounds:
- Separation: Usable if you have been separated (living in separate residences) 18 months or more.
- Irreconcilable differences: Usable if you have been married 6 months or more (no separation required).
Other acceptable grounds remain available. Citing any of them, however, generally creates no advantage to the filing party and sometimes needlessly keeps the process from remaining uncontested.
